As governor inaugurated movement to collect food and supplies for the Belgians, the state of Kansas and its citizens, donating 50,000 barrels of flour, meal and other food supplies, which were delivered to the Belgians within 90 days after the call was issued.

Began as lumber yard salesman and bookkeeper, Olathe, 1886. Traveling salesman 2 years, and studied commercial law. Now senior member Hodges Brothers, owning 12 lumber yards and 12 hardware stores, also owners of Johnson County (Kansas) Democrat.
President Olathe Building and Loan Company.
Director of numerous banks. Member Kansas Senate 2 terms, 1904-1912.
