Career

Joined Moravian Church, 1759. Superintendent Livonian Mission, agent for Moravian Church in Russia, 1782-1802. Involved in administration and financial matters of Moravian missions, 1791-1801.

Ordained bishop, 1802, came to the United States to take control of America missions. Successful in securing complete separation of America from European branch of Moravian Church, 1802-1811. Author: Geschichte der Mission der Evangelischen Brueder unter den Indianern in Nordamerika, 1789 (translated as History of the Mission of the United Brethren among the Indians in North America, published London, England., 1794).
