Career
Called to the Bar, 1883. Queen's Counsel 1895. Appointed to the Legislative Council of Nova Scotia, 1889.
An unsuccessful candidate for the House of Commons of Canada for Cape Breton County at general elections, 1887 and 1891, and at bye - election, 1896.
Appointed a member of the Government of Nova Scotia, led by the Honourable West. South. Fielding, without portfolio, 1891. On the resignation of Mr.
Fielding, 1896, was called on by the LieutenantGovernor to form a new administration, which he succeeded in doing, taking the portfolio of Provincial Secretary. Was then elected by acclamation for the county of Victoria.
Appealed to the people, 1897, 1901, and 1906, and his Government was.sustained by overwhelming majorities.
A Liberal. King’s Counsel; Premier and Provincial Secretary of Nova Scotia.
