Studied drawing under Washington Allston. Learned line-engraving from Asaph Willard of Hartford, Connecticut.
Moved to Philadelphia, 1843. Engaged chiefly with engraving notes for state banks. Engraved plates for 34 editions of James Fenimore Cooper’s novels, 1859-1861, for Frances South. Osgood’s Poems, 1850, for Horatio Alger’s Life of Edwin Forrest, 1877, moved to New York City, 1862, primarily engaged in miniature painting.
A self-portrait appeared in Anne Hollingsworth Wharton’s Heirlooms in Miniatures, 1898.
Only public exhibition of his miniatures appeared in Retrospective Exhibit at Columbian Exposition, Chicago, 1893.
Married Susan Wetherill, 1849, at least 1 daughter, Idaho.
