Barber, George Holcomb was born on November 15, 1864 in Glastonbury, Connecticut, United States. Son of Ralph and Mary Henrietta (Holcomb) Barber.


Bachelor of Science, Massachusetts Agricultural College, 1885. Bachelor of Science, Boston University, 1885. Doctor of Medicine College Physicians and Surgical (Columbia), 1888.

Unmarried. Appointed assistant surgeon United States Navy, May 23, 1889. Promoted through grades to medical director, rank of rear admiral, October 15, 1917. Service at sea, 14 years, mostly in foreign waters, commanding hospital ship relief as last duty.

Shore duty 14 years, on receiving ships, at United States Naval Academy, training station, at Newport, Rhode Island, and naval hospitals, New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Olongapo, P.I., and Fort Lyon, Colorado.
