Entered navy, 1861; captain, 1886. Admiral, 1901; served Abyssinian War in Naval Brigade, including action of Arogee and storming of Magdala, 1868 (despatches, promoted to Lieutenant, medal). As commodore commanded Training Squadron, 1895-1897.
Dockyard Reserve, Chatham, 1898-1900. Aide-de-camp to His (or Her) Majesty Queen Victoria, 1899-1901, and to King Edward until promoted Rear-Adml. Rear-Admiral in command Home Squadron and second in command of Home Fleet, 1902-1903.
Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, 1903. Directed the operations of a mixed naval and military force which captured the Dervish stronghold of Illig, 1904. As Commander-in-Chief was present on Somali Coast, 1904, during the operations against the Mullah. Commander-in-Chief, East Indies, 1903-1906.
