Norton, George Lowell was born on March 1, 1837 in Castine, Maine, United States. Son of George Dunham and Eunice (Shepardson) Norton.

Career

Went to sea in boyhood and served on sailing vessels until 1861. Officer on steamships in the United States quartermaster’s department, 1861-1865. Master on steamships running between New York and Southern ports, 1865-1871.

Harbor master, New Orleans, 1871-1876. Supervising inspector of steam vessels for Gulf States, by appointment of President Hayes, 1876-1884 (resigned). Editor public Marine Journal, New York, since 1885.

President Marine Journal Company Commissioner of pilots. Member of the Board of Governors New York State Nautical School. Member National Board of Steam Navigation.
