Member United States Senate from Georgia, November 13, 1816-September 23, 1818, 29-33, supported South Carolina. nullification, proposed secession if federal tariff and bank policies were not reversed. Governor Georgia, 1823-1827, advocated state programs for schools, canals, railroads, secured cession of all Creek Indian lands. Attended States-Rights Convention, Milledgeville, Georgia, 1832.
