Came to the United States, 1822. Appointed midshipman United States Navy, 1832, passed midshipman, 1838. Sailed with Wilkes Exploring Expedition in Antarctic and South Pacific, 1838-1842.
Commissioned Lieutenant, 1843.
Served in Pacific Squadron during Mexican War, in Mediterranean, 1847-1849, in East India Squadron, 1854-1856. Commissioned commander, 1861.
Commanded storeship Supply, 1861-1863, Saratoga off Georgia coast, 1864, Saint Mary's on Pacific coast off South America, 1865-1866. Retired as captain, 1867.
