Not illustrated. 1892 edition. Excerpt: ... CHAPTER XX FROM ISFAHAN TO SHIRAZ Out of the ivory palaces whereby they have mule thee glad.--Pstlm xlv. 9. Although the European traveller will have made Julfa his headquarters during his residence at Isfahan, his post-horses will upon Postal arrival have been obliged to return upon their tracks for a distance of over three miles--paid for as one farsakh-- to the chapar-Jihanch in Isfahan, and from there they will have to be ordered beforehand to come out again to Julfa when he is ready to start upon his forward way. The table of stations and distances upon the road to Shiraz is as follows: 1-- f = Telegraph stations. Quitting the squalid and dusty precincts of Julfa and leaving the Armenian cemetery, with its shattered gravestones, on the right, the track mounts the slopes of the Kuh-i-Suffa, until we reach a point where, as the road dips into a hollow, we inevitably turn round in the saddle to take a parting look at Isfahan. There, outspread over 1 In addition to the authorities already quoted for the journey from Teheran to Isfahan, and most, if not all, of whom have also described the march from Isfahan to Shiraz, I may cite for the latter the following works: J. B. Tavernier (1665), Travel*, lib. v. cap. xx.; J. Struys (1672), Voyage*, cap. xxxiii.-iv.; Sir J. Chardin (1674), Voyage* (edit. Langles), vol. viii. pp. 195-314; C. Le Brun (17045), Travel*, cap. l.-lv.; A. Dupre (1808), Voyage en Perte, vol. i. caps, xxv.xxviii.; J. S. Buckingham (1816), Travel*, vol. i. cap. xii. to end; Lieutenant T. (The first edition of this work appeared in August 1894, w...)
The first edition of this work appeared in August 1894, within a few weeks of the firing of the first shot in the Far Eastern War. Of the three nations who had furnished its subject matter, two were the protagonists, and the third was the victim in that eventful struggle. There was good fortune, therefore, in the moment of publication. But if this coincidence was undesigned, it was attended by a more than proportionate risk. For the book itself was less a history, or a narrative, or a criticism, than it was a forecast, entered into with only so much confidence as was born of a patient examination of facts upon the spot, but in ignorance of how soon it would be subjected to the rough test of experience. The fact that I am able to issue a fourth edition of the book after the conclusion of a war that was seismic both in its character and consequences in substantially the same guise as it originally wore, with alterations and additions that, while required to bring it up to date, only confirm my former argument, is to me a consolatory vindication of my venture then, and may, I hope, be regarded by others as a sufficient ground for republication now. (Following his election to Parliament and extensive travel...)
Following his election to Parliament and extensive travels through Asia, George Nathaniel Curzon (1859-1925) published in 1894 this consideration of the present state of Japan, Korea and China within a changing international landscape. Later viceroy of India, Curzon was fascinated by the rich cultural heritage of the Far East, yet he remained a staunch supporter of British imperialism. He explains that the book's purpose is to delve deeper into political, social and economic conditions, rather than present a travel narrative of 'temples, tea-houses and bric-...-brac'. After devoting a substantial section to each country, Curzon closes with 'The Prospect', exploring what he envisages for the future of the whole region. The favourable reception of this title and his 1892 work, Persia and the Persian Question (also reissued in the Cambridge Library Collection), highlighted Curzon's diligently acquired knowledge of Asian affairs and how they affected Britain's imperial interests.

Elibron Classics. Replica of 1892 edition by Longmans, Green, and Co., London and New York. Oversize maps are available as a free download. This is an illustrated edition. This edition is published in 2 volumes sold separately. Persia and the Persian Question, written in 1892, has been considered Curzon’s magnum opus and can be seen as a sequel to Russia in Central Asia. Curzon was commissioned by The Times to write several articles on the Persian political environment, but while there he decided to write a book on the country as whole. This two volume work covers Persia’s history and governmental structure, as well as graphics, maps and pictures (some taken by Curzon himself). Curzon was aided by General Albert Houtum-Schindler and the Royal Geographical Society (RGS), both of which helped him gain access to material to which as a foreigner he would not have been entitled to have access. General Schindler provided Curzon with information regarding Persia’s geography and resources, as well as serving as an unofficial editor. The map which accompanied the volumes was the product of RGS, but was later pointed out as inaccurate (according to British officials) as it depicted the islands near the Straits of Hormuz (Sirri, Abu Musa, and the Tunbs) as belonging to the Persians. Curzon was appalled by his government’s apathy towards Persia as a valuable defensive buffer to India from Russian encroachment. Years later Curzon would lament that “Persia has alternatively advanced and receded in the estimation of British statesmen, occupying now a position of extravagant prominence, anon one of unmerited obscurity.”

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

The work of which I here publish the first part, though the outcome of two journeys round the world in 1887-8 and in 1892-3, does not pretend to be a book of travel. Eather is it an attempt to examine, in a comparative light, the political, social, and economic conditions of the kingdoms and principalities of the Far East. By this title I signify the countries that lie between India and the Pacifiq Ocean. They include both the best known and the least knowT i ofO riental nations Japan and China in the former category; Korea, Tongking, A nnam, Cochin China, Cambogia, andS iam in the latter. In respect of race, rehgion, and habits, Burma should fall within the same class ;but since it is now an integral portion of the Indian Empire, it will be purposely excluded from this survey. The above-mentioned countries have each their special features of climate, scenery, architecture, religion, and life, differentiating them from each other, and still more from the rest of the world.
