He attended schools in Milledgeville. He was married to Sarah Williams in 1852 and had a daughter. Doles was in the mercantile business before the war.
When the war began, he entered the Confederate Army as colonel of the 4th Georgia Regiment, having previously formed a militia company known as the “Baldwin Blues. ” He won laurels for his part in the battle of Seven Pines and fought well during the Seven Days in 1862. Promoted to brigadier general on November 1, 1862, Doles was a brigade commander with the Army of Northern Virginia during the battles of Sharpsburg, Gettysburg, Chancellorsville, and Cold Harbor.
He was considered one of the best brigadiers in the Confederate Army. Doles was killed by a sharpshooter near Bethesda Church at Cold Harbor, Virginia, on June 2, 1864.
