Private tutor; Merchant Taylors’ School. From age of 14 to 21 in the City. Then made first appearance on stage at Olympic Theatre under Henry Neville.
Later joined the Gilbert - Sullivan - Carte management, and played in all their operas except Yeoman of the Guard, during run of which took a lease of Saint James’s Theatre. Relinquished management and returned to Savoy for a time.
