(A treasury, a mine, of clowns, this is the dazzling story...)
A treasury, a mine, of clowns, this is the dazzling story of clowning from ancient Greece to today's three-ring circus, from the original Polichinelle to the modern-day Emmett Kelly and Lou Jacobs. "Never," a ringmaster might proclaim "in the history of publishing has so much clown lore been assembled between two covers!" It seemed obvious to author George Bishop that the onlypeople who could tell him about what clowning is really like - what it is all about - were the clowns themselves; but where to find them? Gradually, over a three-year period, Bishop tracked down and visited working and semi-retired clowns (a clown is never fully retired) all the way from a mobile home nestling in a remote Southern California mountain village to clown Alley itself backstage at a modern circus. The fascinating result of many hours of conversations is yours to enjoy and marvel at in The World of Clowns. It is your pleasure and privilege to read of experiences that never before have been set down in print, simply because no one had taken the time to seek them out and record their remarkable histories. But that is only the beginning. As George Bishop continued his quest, a relationship developed that is rare between writer and subject. He began to feel a kinship with these warm, responsive people and they, sensing his genuine interest and respect, grew to trust and value his friendship. They made him a member of their select club. Scrapbooks dusty from lack of use were produced as the writer was offered the loan of personal clown pictures taken by other clowns because these wonderful performers wanted to share their private memories with the audiences they have served so long. The majority of the pictures in these pages have not previously been published. The only sad note in this happy book is that clowns who live, eat, and sleep their profession are a dying breed. Truly their like shall not pass this way again.
