(If the attempt to go over ground already trodden by a his...)
If the attempt to go over ground already trodden by a historian of the power and learning of Dr. Pauli should carry with it an appearance of presumption, I may plead by way of excuse, and, as I hope, of justification, that in the first instance I had thought of confining myself to the office of a translator, and of asking permission of Dr. Pauli to reproduce his history in English. But as I went further into the history of the period, I found myself unable to agree with many of his conclusions, while the necessity of fuller treatment in certain portions of the subject, especially the constitutional aspect of it, forced itself upon me. I therefore began to study the history of De Montfort stime afresh, and the present volume is the result. I have no fear of being charged with any wish of superseding the work of Dr. (Typographical errors above are due to OCR software and don't occur in the book.) (This book was originally published prior to 1923, and rep...)
This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact. We believe this work is culturally important in its original archival form. While we strive to adequately clean and digitally enhance the original work, there are occasionally instances where imperfections such as blurred or missing pages, poor pictures or errant marks may have been introduced due to either the quality of the original work or the scanning process itself. Despite these occasional imperfections, we have brought it back into print as part of our ongoing global book preservation commitment, providing customers with access to the best possible historical reprints. We appreciate your understanding of these occasional imperfections, and sincerely hope you enjoy seeing the book in a format as close as possible to that intended by the original publisher.

(The subject of this memoir was in no sense, except in so ...)
The subject of this memoir was in no sense, except in so far as was inseparable from his official position, a public man. During life he rather courted obscurity, and his name is but little known, except to scholars, beyond the precincts of his own university. He never led a party, he founded no school, he never wrote a book. His life was spent in quiet study and self-denying labour, sweetened not by fame, but by the companionship of friends and the consciousness of many-sided utility. Under such circumstances his influence could not be very widely felt, but within his own circle it was deep and permanent. Over those with whom he came much in contact, over many whose hand he touched but once or twice, his intense individuality, with its strange blending of strength and tenderness, of frankness and sensibility, of human affection and scientific enthusiasm, exercised an irresistible fascination. Nor was his example as a scholar less attractive than his character as a man. The width and exactitude of his knowledge, the thoroughness of his research, his elevation of science above all thought of self, his respect for genuine study in all branches however remote from his own, gave to many students a new ideal and a stimulus all the more potent because it was suggested rather than enforced.
