Bvtd. captain for meritorious conduct at Gettysburg, where was severely wounded through hips and lost left leg, July 2, 1863.
Awarded congressional medal of honor for gallant and meritorious conduct at battles of Bulletin Run and Gettysburg. Raised company in Philadelphia upon President Lincoln’s 2d call, and was elected captain, but loss of leg prevented service at front again.
Appointed United States consul at Auckland, New Zealand, March 28, 1878. To Saint Helena, April 30, 1879. To Matanzas, Cuba, September 1, 1880.
