Morell, George Webb was born on January 8, 1815 in Cooperstown, New York, United States. Son of Judge George and Maria (Webb) Morell.

Graduated from the United States Military Academy, 1835.

Career

Construction engineer Charleston & Cincinnati R.R., 1837. Admitted to New York bar, 1842. Commissioned major 4th New York Volunteers, 1846.

Commissioned major, div. engineer New York Militia, 1849, colonel, 1852-1861. Commissioner United States Circuit court for Southern district New York, 1954-1961. Colonel, quartermaster chief of staff to Major General Sanford in organizing regts. in New York City, 1861.

Commissioned brigadier general United States Volunteers, 1861, major general, 1862. On duty guarding approaches to Washington District of Columbia, 1861-1862. In command of draft rendezvous in Indianapolis, 1863-1864.
