George William Alger

Alger, George William was born in 1872 in Burlington, Vermont, United States. Son of Charles J. and Harriot S. (Murdoch) Alger.

Career

Drew. Practiced in New York since 1895. Member Alger, Andrew & Rohlfs. Drafted present New York employers’ liability act and many amendments to labor and child labor laws.

Appointed May 1926, Moreland Act commissioner by governor of New York, to investigate operation and management of state prisons of New York, and operation of Board of Parole for same. Filed report with recommendations, December 1926. Member Committee of Experts on Parole, New York State, drafting present parole law of state, 1930.

Chairman Commision on Cloak and Suit Industry, New York City, impartial chairman having jurisdiction over disputes in the industry, 1931-1935. Appointed, December 18, 1933, Mooreland commissioner, by governor of New York, to investigate state superintendent of insurance in connection with mortgage guarantee companies, in default on guaranties issued aggregating nearly $2,000,000,000. Reported on the acts and transactions of the companies and of the superintendent of insurance concerning same, with recommendations on October 5, 1934.

Appointed special master in re-organization of R.K.O., 1937. Appointed member Motion Picture Appeal Board constituted under anti-turst decree, United States v. Paramount Pictures and others, 1941.

Appointed member Loyalty Review Board, created by order of President, 1947.
