( A fascinating strand of the human potential movement of...)
A fascinating strand of the human potential movement of the 1960s involved the dream mystique of a previously unknown Malaysian tribe, the Senoi, first brought to the attention of the Western world by adventurer-anthropologist-psychologist Kilton Stewart. Exploring the origin, attraction, and efficacy of the Senoi ideas, G. William Domhoff also investigates current research on dreams and concludes that the story of Senoi dream theory tells us more about certain aspects of American culture than it does about this distant tribe. In analyzing its mystical appeal, he comes to some unexpected conclusions about American spirituality and practicality.

(This extensively revised edition of Blacks in the White E...)
This extensively revised edition of Blacks in the White Establishment? adds fifteen years to the life stories of the African Americans whose opportunities were dramatically changed by a nationally prominent educational opportunity program that provided scholarships for disadvantaged people of color to attend the same elite boarding schools that educate the children of wealthy white Americans. Beyond tracing the individuals into middle age, and expanding coverage of their careers, with special attention to experiences in the corporate world, a new chapter on their children's education and early careers gives the new edition a poignant and unusual intergenerational perspective. Blacks in the White Elite shows why America is at a crucial juncture in relations between blacks and whites, when advances made since the Civil Rights Movement could either continue or retrench, depending on the decisions made by our governments, communities, and schools. The voices of African Americans heard in this book bring home for the reader the everyday impact of national policy issues and debates on race and class in America.

This book looks systematically at the extent to which Jews, women, African Americans, Latinos, Asians and gay men and lesbians have entered the higher circles of power that constituted what sociologist C. Wright Mills called 'the power elite.' Using a deft combination of academic research and telling anecdotes, the book examines the backgrounds and careers of such well-known members of the power elite as attorney general Alberto Gonzales, secretary of state Condoleezza Rice, former secretary of state Colin Powell, and former C.E.O. of Hewlett-Packard Carly Fiorina to explain why and how the power elite has diversified and the effect this diversification has had on the way power works in the United States.

( This volume presents a network of social power, indica...)
This volume presents a network of social power, indicating that theories inspired by C.Wright Mills are far more accurate views about power in America than those of Mills's opponents. Dr. Domhoff shows how and why coalitions within the power elite have involved themselves in such policy issues as the Social Security Act (1935) and the Employment Act (1946), and how the National Labor Relations Act (1935) could pass against the opposition of every major corporation. The book descri bes how experts worked closely with the power elite in shaping the plansfor a post-World War II world economic order, in good part realized during the past 30 years. Arguments are advanced that the fat cats who support the Democrats cannot be understood in terms of narrow self-interest, and that moderate conservatives dominated policy-making under Reagan.

(This text presents a neurocognitive model of dreams that ...)
This text presents a neurocognitive model of dreams that draws from empirical research to explain better the process of dreaming and the nature of dream content. Contemporary advances in neuroscience, dream content analysis, cognitive linguistics, statistics and computer software have made it possible to revitalize this area of research with the use of scientific methods. Domhoff's neurocognitive model helps explain the neural and cognitive bases for dreaming. He discusses how dreams express conceptions and concerns, and how they are consistent over years and decades. He also shows that there may be limits to understanding meaning of dreams as there are many aspects of dream content that cannot be related to waking cognition of personal concerns. In addition, the book includes a detailed explanation of the methods needed to test the model as well as a case study of a comprehensive dream journal.

( In his new book G. William Domhoff provides the most t...)
In his new book G. William Domhoff provides the most thorough critique to date of state autonomy theory as it has been applied to the American federal government. The view under attack holds that the federal government, rather than the banks and corporations, wields greater power in the United States. Utilizing new arguments and new archival findings, this book challenges every case study that state autonomy theorists have done on the Progressive Era, the New Deal, and World War II. Domhoff then concludes with an analysis of why the theory received so much attention. In addition to demonstrating the weaknesses of state autonomy theory in the case of the U.S., the book presents a step-by-step statement of the author's non-Marxian class dominance theory, defining each concept clearly and suggesting the kind of evidence necessary to support it. The chapters on the origins of the Social Security Act 1935 and on the role of corporations in the industrial mobilization for World War II lead to general statements on the factors that limit the effectiveness of liberal and labor political forces in America; the chapter on the Progressive Era contains an analysis of why the corporate community has been more powerful in the United States than in Europe. Although it is part of a continuing debate with other experts, the author has marshaled his argument in a style that is always accessible. As a result, the book is ideal for use in courses in which the instructor wants to compare and contrast original presentations of rival viewpoints by major proponents of the debated theories.

(In this book, a social psychologist and a political socio...)
In this book, a social psychologist and a political sociologist explore the dramatic transitions faced by the graduates of A Better Chance, a programme that has brought black students from economically impoverished backgrounds to some of America's most exclusive prep schools and universities - and ultimately to positions of power and prestige. The text is not only an account of this innovative attempt to transcend racial barriers but also a contribution to the ongoing controversy about the relative importance of race and class in American society.

(More equality, more fairness, more opportunity―these are ...)
More equality, more fairness, more opportunity―these are themes on which progressives, now more than ever, could win elections and build social movements. Yet American progressives too seldom have put themselves in a position to capture the loyalty of American voters. In his newest book, Domhoff explains why the left's political strategies have failed, and he calls for new strategies and alliances that will lead to political success and a better America. Sure to be widely read and debated, the book reveals how campaigns by Nader and other third-party progressives have been misguided. Domhoff explains how and why third-party candidacies fail because of the structure of the political system, and then presents a new way for progressives to enter the political arena without compromising their basic values or their emphasis on participation in social movements. He shows how "planning through the market" holds more potential for freedom and fairness than centrally planned economies. He also shows how progressives can redefine who is "us" and who is "them" in a way that is more inclusive, allowing people across the class spectrum to support a renewed egalitarian vision. Accessible to anyone interested in American politics and policies, this book offers the political application of Domhoff's renowned theories of American power. For those who want to spark a dialogue in discussion groups, it is a lively companion reading to his Who Rules America as well as other books on power, inequality or government in America.
