George William Hill

Background

Hill, George William was born on December 25, 1845 in Saint Peter’s Portuguese, Guernsey, England. Son of Doctor Ninian and Marion (Lancaster) Hill.

Education

Educated in France at French Lycee private school. Studied law at McGill College, Montreal, Canada. (Doctor of Philosophy, Villanova College).

Career

Father of George Griswold H. After leaving college was employed in Bank of Montreal, and later on staff of Montreal Herald. In service of Continental Insurance Company of New York (located at Chicago), 1870-1879. Established Farmers’ Review, Chicago, 1879.

Removed to Saint Paul, Minnesota, 1886, and managed and edited The Farmer until 1888.

Editor-in-chief United States Department of Agriculture, 1899-1911. Editor Year Book of Department of Agriculture, 1897-1911.

Officier du Merite Agricole. Cleveland Democrat.
