Served in Merchant Navy 1927-1929. Worked in various jobs United States of America 1929-1936. Returned to United Kingdom. joined BBC as photographer 1936.
Appointed war correspondent, LIFE Magazine 1940. Travelled to over 60 countries, covered 18 war campaigns, photographed London Blitz, W. Africa with Free French, Tobruk. Western Desert, fall of Burma, Sicily and Salerno landings, D-Day Normandy landings, liberation of Paris, Brussels, Holland and Denmark, the surrender at Ltineburg Heath, liberation of Belsen concentration camp.
After Second World War made over 15 photographing expeditions to Africa. Co-founder Magnum Photos 1947. Travelled Far East, India, Middle East, writing and photographing for books and magazine articles 1949-1980.
Arts Council Bursaries 1975-1977 for work in tribal Africa.
Married 1st Cicely J. Hussey-Freke in 1942 (died in 1949), 2nd Lois Witherspoon in 1953.
