Randolph, George Wythe was born on March 10, 1815 in “Monticello,” Virginia. Son of Governor Thomas Mann and Martha (Jefferson) Randolph.

Career

Practiced law in Richmond, Virginia, 1849-1861. Organized Richmond Howitzers (artillery company), 1861. Peace commissioner from Virginia to the United States Government, 1861.

Secessionist to Virginia Conference of 1861. Commissioned colonel, 1861, promoted to chief of artillery under Magruder. Promoted brig. general, 1862.

Secretary of war Confederate States American, March 22-November 15, 1862.
