Worked as a bookkeeper in a bank, 1920. Became interested in photography but remained an amateur until he moved to Moscow, 1924. Became a full-time photo-reporter in 1924, first of all for the union magazine Metallist.
From 1926, worked for Pravda. From 1928, head of the information department on the building site of the Magnitogorsk steelworks. Produced a photographic chronicle of this huge project.
Worked for the magazine USSR in Construction, 1930-1941. During World War II, war correspondent for Izvestia. Was assigned to the team photographing the fall of Berlin and the German capitulation.
In the postwar years, worked on many illustrated publications. From 1957 until his death, with the magazine Soviet Life, published in the USA by the Novosti press agency. An exhibition of his photographs was shown in Berlin in
1967.
