Graduated from the Dnepropetrovsk Metallurgical Institute, 1934, and the Military Academy of the General Staff, 1953.
Began as a supervisor, and later became an engineer and acting deputy head of the Nizhnepetrovsk Liebknecht Works, 193439. Party posts in the Ukraine (possibly security posts), 1939-1941. Commander of a regiment and an operative group, and deputy head of the political administration of the army.
Probably with SMERSH, 1941-1945. Deputy Head, Deputy High
Commander, and Chief-of-staff of the Soviet Section of the Allied Commission in Austria, 1945-1951. Senior posts in the USSR Committee for State Security (Committee for State Security) from 1953.
Deputy Chairman of the Committee for State Security, July, 1970. Member of the Central Auditing Committee, 1971-1976. Candidate member of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, 1976-1981.
Full member from 1982. Became 1st Deputy Chairman of the Committee for State Security after the mysterious death of S. Tsvigun in January 1982. Regarded by observers as an experienced GRU officer.
