Graduated in law at Leningrad University, 1953.
His father was a POW in Germany during WW1I. Became famous after the publication of his short story Bolshaia Ruda, 1961. One of the leading writers of the magazine Iunost during the 1960s. Other books include Tri Minuty Molchaniia (1969, Posev, W. Germany) and Vernyi Ruslan, which for a long time circulated in samizdat before being published by Posev in 1975.
Since then, it has been translated into several languages. Came into conflict with the Soviet authorities over the foreign publication of his works. Emigrated and worked for some time as an editor of the monthly magazine Grani.
