From age 15 worked as type-setter and engaged in revol activities. From 1901 secretary. Printers' Trade Union, Sofia. From 1902 member, Bulgarian Workers' Social-Democratic Party (Tesnyaki).
Helped to organize strikes. 1904-1923 one of leaders, Bulgarian League of Revol TradeUnions. From 1909 member, Central Committee, Tesnyaki Party (from 1919 Communist Party Bulgaria).
1910 and 1925 deleg, 1st and 2nd Conferences of Balkan Social-Democrats. Repeatedly arrested and imprisoned for revol activities. During World War 1 protested general mobilization and Bulgarian involvement in war.
After 1917 October Revol actively championed Soviet cause. 1921 took active part in 3rd Communist International Congress, where he met Lenin, and in 1st Profintern Congress, at which he was elected to Central Committee. September 1923 one of leaders of Bulgarian workers’ uprising.
After suppression of uprising lived abroad as professional revol and worked for Communist International Executive Committee. 1933 arrested in Berlin on charge of having set fire to Reichstag. 21 September-23 December 1933 tried in Leipzig.
27 February 1934 arrived in Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics after being released on the intercession of the Soviet government, which granted him Soviet citizenship. 1935-1943 secr-general, Communist International Executive Committee. 1937-1945 deputy, Union of the Soviet Socialist Republics Supreme Soviet.
1942 helped to organize Patriotic Front of Bulgaria and Bulgarian partisan movement. 1944 helped to organize armed uprising of 9 September which led to overthrow of Bulgarian monarchy. November 1945 returned to Bulgaria.
