FOL’BORT, Georgiy was born on February 4, 1885 in Saint St. Petersburg.
1909 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy.
While still a student began working in l.P.Pavlov’s physiological laboratory. 1908 published first paper on the physiology of conditioned reflexes. 1912 defended doctor’s thesis on negative conditioned reflexes.
1912-1914 assistant professor, 1914-1926 senior lecturer and deputy head Chair of Physiology, Military Medical Academy. 1916-1923 professor, Chair of Animal Physiology, Women's Higher Agric Courses.
1923-1926 head, Chair of Physiology, Leningrad University. 1926-1946 head, Chair of Normal Physiology, Khar’kov Medical Institute. 1946-1960 head, Chair of Normal Physiology, Kiev Medical Institute and head, Department of Higher Nervous Activity and Trophism, Bogomolets Institute of Physiology, Ukraine Academy of Sciences.
1927 set up laboratory for the study of the physiology of digestion at the Ukraine Institute of Experimental Endocrinology. Established large physiology department at the Ukraine Mechnikov Institute of Experimental Biology and Medical, Khar’kov. From 1926 head, Laboratory of Conditioned Reflexes, Ukraine Psychoneurological Institute, considered by Pavlov to be the first branch of his own laboratory.
Discovered negative conditioned reflexes resulting from the formation of temporary associate based on inhibition of the cerebral cortex centers. Did research on the working capacity of the cortex of the cerebral hemispheres, on tracking phenomena in the cortex and on conditioned stimuli formed by words and their connections. Analysed bile secretion and its entry into the intestine.
Devised double bile fistula test. Proved that the fibers of the splanchnic nerve stimulate gastric secretion. Studied the function of excitosecretory substances produced by the pylorus.
Devised new method of obtaining secretin. Made major contribution to dietetics with his research on the effects of vegetable juices and atropine on gastric secretion. Also made important contributions to the study of exhaustion and recuperation with his "Fol’bort rules,” which define the basic laws of these processes.
Knowledge of these laws made it possible to determine the functional limits of various systems in the organism. Wrote over 130 works.
Religion obstructs scientific research and technological progress.
Marxism–Leninism as the only truth could not, by its very nature, become outdated.
Member, Ukraine Academy of Sciences from 1951.
