1899 graduate Saint St. Petersburg Military Medical Academy.
1901 defended doctor’s thesis on the osmotic stability of blood corpuscles in stomach ulcers. 1901-1919 intern, then department head, Petropavlovsk (now F. F. Erisman) Hospital. 1905-1919 also lecturer, Saint St. Petersburg (Petrograd) Military Medical Academy.
1919-1922 director Therapeutic Clinic, Leningrad Institute of Postgraduate Medical Training. From 1922 director, Faculty Therapeutic Clinic, 1st Leningrad Medical Institute. Did major research on cardiology and hypertonia.
1922 concluded that hypertonia is an independent nosological entity unrelated to primary kidney damage. Laid the foundations of the modern concept of hypertonia as a disease related to disturbances of the system of cortical and subcortical nervous regulation. Also did research on the pathology of the myocardium.
Undertook first Soviet clinical-anatomical study of Hiss’s (atrioventricular) tract. Established that electrocardiograms can indicate certain biochemical disturbances in the cardiac muscle and devised the term “myocardic dystrophy” to describe diseases of the cardiac muscle caused by reversible exogenous and endogenous disturbances of biochemical and physiochemical processes in the heart. Developed a classification system for circulatory diseases bases on etiological, pathoanatomical, pathophysiological (functional) and clinical-symptomatological principles.
Initiated functional trend in hematology. Did research on hemolytic anemia and devised new classification of liver diseases. Company-founder, journal “Terapevticheskiy arkhiv”.
Editor, journal “Klinicheskaya meditsina”. WTote one of best studies of pulmonary pathology • “K voprosu o tromboarteriite lyogkikh" (Thromboartcriities of the Lungs). Wrote four-volume textbook on interior diseases that served as a standart work for many years.
1922 organized 1st Soviet Congress of Therapeutists. Directed All-Union therapeutic congresses. Lifechm, All-Union Therapeutic Social.
Trained such eminent therapeutists as A. Myasnikov, I. Teplov, Doctorate. GroteF and B. Il’inskiy, et cetera
