Dust jacket notes: "Here is a trenchant and amusing account of the issues that have stirred the American people from 1922, when the first Pulitzer Prize cartoon award was made, to 1958, with a full-page reproduction of each of the winning cartoons. It is significant that these cartoons cannot, as one might think, stand as a political history of the years since 1922. On the contrary, Gerald Johnson clearly shows that the Pulitzer Prize judges have so consistently shied away from the controversial issues that this book appropriately could have been called 'Drawing Away.' For instance, no cartoon dealing with Prohibition or Ku Kluxism, or any one of a long list of vital matters, has ever won the award, and from this fact the author has been able to make some surprising deductions about American opinions and attitudes. However, in pointing out the omission, Mr. Johnson makes up for it in a scintillating discussion of both the issue which is illustrated in the cartoon, and the more important issues which were ignored. The Lines Are Drawn also includes a brief biographical sketch of each of the prize-winning cartoonists and of Joseph Pulitzer himself, who had as colorful a career as any of the journalistic giants. Gerald Johnson has found not only an ingenious way of reading our history, but one which shows in a new and forceful light the elements that have gone into its making."

(These essays form a random ad hoc reckoning of the Americ...)
These essays form a random ad hoc reckoning of the American experience as regards politics, the great national virtues, and some of our foibles. Mr. Johnson surveys our attitude toward justice and finds the plight of minorities a deficiency disease; he sees in Castro a sign of the strictures of our freedom. In Baltimore the quasi-renewal of the city reveals to him the evanescent character of American civilization; the Profumo case shows up the defects in the British Establishment. Myrdal, Galbraith and Milton Elsenhower bring light on the American economic-social scene; Dr. Frank Porter Graham's experience as UN mediator reflects on the true nature of that body and its chances for success. (1927. Historians and biographers have written many estima...)
1927. Historians and biographers have written many estimates of Andrew Jackson's career that might fairly be summed up in his mother's words: "The General kicked the kivers off and we cotch cold." The General kicked right lustily. He kicked off many of the warm wrappings that swathed the young republic from the bitter blasts of democracy. He kicked away the existing political system and substituted one more to his liking. He was the most uncomfortable of political bedfellows. The author tells the tale of Jackson in this light, with no holds barred. Illustrated.

This excellent history of the United States from the revolution through the term of President Wilson is the second member of a trilogy in which "America Is Born" was the first volume (and "America Moves Forward" is the third). Written critically and in an animated manner, "America Grows Up" handles significant events and personalities in a fresh and searching style. ~ 1960 Review

John Paul Jones (born John Paul; July 6, 1747 - July 18, 1792) was a Scottish American sailor and the United States' first well-known naval fighter in the American Revolutionary War. Although he made many friends and enemies among America's political elites, his actions in British waters during the Revolution earned him an international reputation which persists to this day. As such, he is sometimes referred to as the "Father of the American Navy" (an epithet he shares with John Barry). He later served in the Imperial Russian Navy, subsequently obtaining the rank of rear admiral.
