Cox finished Drexel University with Bachelor of Science degree in 1966, and with Master of Science degree in 1967. She earned Doctor of Philosophy degree in 1970.
Professional career of Geraldine Cox has involved developing policy for the chemical industry in the fields of health and safety, water pollution, and hazardous waste management. She began her professional career at the Raytheon Company in 1970, where she served as Technical Coordinator of Environmental Programs until 1976. She was granted a White House Fellowship a year later, serving as Special Assistant to the Secretary of Labor for one year.
In 1977 Cox joined the American Petroleum Institute as Environmental Scientist, a post she held until 1979, when she was named Vice President and Technical Director of Chemical Manufacturing Association. She held that position until 1991, when she joined Fluor Daniel as Vice President.
Cox was responsible for establishing the chemical industry’s guidelines for community emergencies following the explosion of a plant in Bhopal, India. The result in 1985 was the establishment of CAER (Community Awareness and Emergency Response). Cox has held various posts concurrently. She founded the Marine Water Quality Committee and chaired it from 1975 to 1980. She served on the American Chemical Society’s Committee on Science.
Cox has been a member of the American Society for Testing and Materials, the Water Pollution Control Federation, and the American National Standards Institute.
