Gerard Kane was born in 1946, in Utica, New York, United States. He had three brothers and a sister.
Gerard Kane studied at the University of the District of Columbia.
Gerard Kane joined the United States Army in 1964. He became a medical corpsman and served at the Ia Drang Valley. After his traumatic war experience, Kane became active in Vietnam Veterans Against the War. He came to Washington in 1971 as part of a protest in which veterans threw down their military medals on the steps of the Capitol. He abused drugs and alcohol, was incarcerated, and contemplated suicide before finally deciding to admit himself to a Veterans Administration hospital. He got into a Vietnam veterans support group that became his second home. Kane started to write down his thoughts. His book Veteran's Day: A Viet Nam Memoir was published in 1991. He had a hereditary lung disease and died of pneumonia.
