His first feature as director, Night People, was released in 2015. After an internship with an American advertising agency, he began making short films independently. He is best known for working in genres such as Horror and Science Fiction.
His most high profile work, The Boogeyman (2010), an adaptation of a Stephen King story, received positive reviews and extensive press coverage on the film festival circuit.
In 2013, Lough began work on a full-length film project, entitled Night People. The filming, all on location in Ireland, was completed in August of 2014, and the film was released in cinemas in 2015.
In 2012 Lough was awarded "Most Exciting Breakthrough" in the directing category by Horror Cult Films.
