Gerhard Kubik was born on December 10, 1934, in Vienna, Austria, to Karl and Maria (a bank employee) Kubik.
Kubik studied ethnology, musicology, and African languages at the University of Vienna. He published his doctoral dissertation in 1971 and achieved habilitation in 1980.
Kubik went to Africa every year for the past 48 years. He has published more than 300 articles and books on his experience of studying Africa and African-Americans based on his fieldwork in fifteen African countries, in Venezuela and Brazil.
He was a professor at numerous universities, including Mainz and African universities, and visiting professor and guest lecturer at institutions in dozen of countries, including the United States.
