Career
He played hurling with his local club Kinvara and with the senior inter-county team in the 1980s and 1990s. McInerney traveled to the United States of America in 1985 to play hurling for the weekend and ended up staying there for the next five years until returning permanently in 1990. Each year he had traveled back in August to play for in the All-Ireland semi-finals.
He became known for his white boots which he purchased in the United States of America. At the age of 42 he was the player-coach for the 2007 Kinvara squad.
