(Excerpt from Wall and Water Gardens There is scarcely an...)
Excerpt from Wall and Water Gardens There is scarcely an English country home where some kind of gardening is not practised, while in a very large number of country places their owners have in some degree become aware of the happiness that comes of a love of flowers, and of how much that happiness increases when personal labour and study work together to a better knowledge of their wants and ways. In this book a portion only of the great subject of horticulture is considered, namely, simple ways of using some of the many beautiful mountain plants, and the plants of marsh and water. It is intended as a guide to amateurs, being written by one of their number, who has tried to work out some of the problems presented by the use of these classes of plants to the bettering of our gardens and outer grounds. The book does not attempt to exhaust the subject, neither does it presume to lay down the law. It is enough, in the case of the rock and wall plants, for instance, to name some of the best and easiest to grow. Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) did much to illustrate the possibilities of wall, water and woodland gardening and this book still has much to offer gardeners. Here, chapter by chapter, Gertrude Jekyll describes dry-wall, rock and terrace gardens, stream, lake, pond and pool gardens, water in the rock garden, the heath garden and woodland gardening. Lists of suitable plants for the various locations are given at the end of many chapters in addition to the information in the text.

(This text is written to dispel the myth that lilies are d...)
This text is written to dispel the myth that lilies are difficult to grow and best left to "specialists". This illustrated handbook is aimed specifically at the amateur and is a tribute to these plants which the author feels deserve a much wider appreciation. In spite of an ever-increasing interest in gardens and gardening, the lily had not received the attention which many experts feel its individual beauty as well as its contribution to garden "pictures" deserves. Too often the lily remains the domain of the "specialist" in spite of the fact that it is believed to have been cultivated for longer that any other ornamental flower, having existed in gardens over 3,000 years ago. Gertrude Jekyll's illustrated "guide for amateurs" aims to fill a gap in the literature of the subject and also to encourage those keen to learn more about this beautiful plant. Her hope was that she would excite those readers who, through the pages of this book, will "discover" lilies for the very first time. Although many of today's species have been developed since the 1940s, this work should be a practical aid to those willing to grow these magnificent flowers.

(So many and so great have been the changes within the las...)
So many and so great have been the changes within the last half-century, that I have thought it desirable to note, while it may yet be done, what I can remember of the ways and lives and habitations of the older people of the working class of the country I have lived in almost continuously ever since I was a very young child. It is the south-western corner of the county of Surrey; so near indeed to the actual corner, that the adjoining portions of Hampshire and Sussex come within a radius of a very few miles, and are considered as within the district. After all, geographical distinctions are purely arbitrary, and only really appreciable on the map, where they show in different colours; whereas, in the real world, one steps without knowing it from Surrey into Hampshire on the dry heath-land, and out of Surrey into Sussex from one clay puddle into the next, without being aware in either case that the land is called by another name. The practical boundaries of our country that we commonly call West Surrey, without any reference to parliamentary or other authorised divisions, are the long chalk line of the Hog s Back on the north, with its eastern prolongation beyond Guildford, and the Weald of Sussex to the south. (A beautifully illustrated edition of Colour Schemes for t...)
A beautifully illustrated edition of Colour Schemes for the Flower Garden, one of the most influential gardening books of the 20th century. With an approach as fresh and relevant now as when it first appeared in 1908, this book, by the great garden designer Gertrude Jekyll, is an eloquent expression of her painterly ideas on colour, and takes the form of an inspiring and instructive tour of her own garden at Munstead Wood. Beautiful and delicate illustrations of some of Gertrude Jekyll's favourite plants augment full-color interpretations of her planting plans to convey an instant impression of her aims. This edition - with a preface by Richard Bisgrove - does full justice to the author's vision of the use of color in the garden.
