Gerwald Rockenschaub first studied history, psychology and philosophy at the University of Vienna, and then he studied with Herbert Tasquil at the University of Applied Arts Vienna until 1982.
From the early 1980s Rockenschaub worked as a DJ as well as an artist, first as a painter and later in installation art. In 1984 he had his first solo exhibitions: with Otto Mauer at the Galerie nächst St. Stephan in Vienna and at the Hamburg Vera Munro Gallery.
In 1993, Rockenschaub worked with Andrea Fraser and Christian Philipp Müller in designing the exhibition at the Austrian Pavilion for the Venice Biennale. In 2007 he was featured at Documenta 12 with several works. In 2008, he designed the first external facade for Temporäre Kunsthalle Berlin and presented three large installations at Kunsthalle Bern.
As a techno DJ and musician Rockenschaub founded in 1995 with Michael Meinhart the club "The audioroom" in Vienna. In 2004, he released the LP record "It's..." with Geneva independent label Villa Magica Records founded by Sylvie Fleury and John Armleder.
Currently, Gerwald Rockenschaub lives and works in Berlin.
Since 2012, Rockenschaub has belonged to the currently five-member jury of the Art Prize.
