"How to Imagine" is an unusual meditation about the intersection of personal space — the imagination — with the natural spaces and forces, that surround and nurture it. An artist and a writer collaborate here to examine the meanings, the images and the fantasies implicit to digging into the earth. The narrative proceeds along its way to unravel many of the philosophical and formal assumptions, that underlie contemporary art.

In this natural sequel to How to Imagine the authors direct their attention to the mythology and critical scaffolding, that surrounds the enigmatic figure of Marcel Duchamp. Baruchello and Martin recapture the essence of Duchamp's singularly revolutionary art and discover, as well, the man behind the artist. This edition features ten photographs of Duchamp and his work. A selected bibliography on Duchamp is included.

La Verifica Incerta is one of the very first examples of a film, using found footage. It is a 35-minute-long film, which comprises an interview with Gianfranco Baruchello.
Gianfranco Baruchello is an Italian painter, who works with different techniques and media, including painting, sculpture and drawing. He represents such movements, as Neo-Dada and Pop Art. Throughout his career, the painter investigated the human mind through drawings and paintings of symbols, systems and words. Also, he is a writer and filmmaker, who created and appeared in numerous films and videos.
Background
Gianfranco Baruchello was born on August 29, 1924 in Livorno, Italy. He is a son of Mario Baruchello, a lawyer, director of the Livorno Union of Industrialists and professor at the University of Pisa, and Maria (Mezzera) Baruchello, an elementary teacher.
Education
After World War II, Baruchello received his Bachelor of Law degree.
Career
In 1947, Gianfranco started to work at a chemical company Bombrini-Parodi-Delfino, remaining there until 1959, when he devoted himself to art full time. In 1962, he began painting on large screens and developed his own designs. At that time, among his close friends and influences were Marcel Duchamp, Umberto Eco and Jean-François Lyotard.
In the 1960's, the painter lived in New York City, where he befriended John Cage and took part in the group exhibition "New Realists" at the Sidney Janis Gallery. In 1963, Gianfranco finished his first film, entitled "Il grado zero del paesaggio" (Degree Zero of the Landscape). The same year, he held his first solo exhibition at Galleria La Tartaruga in Rome. Since that time, Gianfranco created hundreds of paintings and objects, incorporating figures, images, words and phrases, many of which explore notions of consumerism and the structures of mass communication.
In 1968, he co-established Artiflex, a company for the "merchandising of everything". Some time later, in 1975, he founded the agricultural company Agricola Cornelia SpA. In 1998, Gianfranco also established Baruchello Cultural Foundation.
Between the end of 2011 and the beginning of 2012, the National Gallery of Modern Art in Rome presented the anthological exhibition of Baruchello's works. Also, in 2014, the retrospective of his works was held at the gallery Sammlung Falckenberg in Hamburg. Three years later, in 2017, the painter showed his works at the exhibition center Raven Row in London.
Currently, Gianfranco Baruchello divides his time between Rome and Paris.
Baruchello is mostly known for his large-scale white monochromes, interrupted by small labyrinthine drawings of corporeal, scientific, linguistic and mathematic symbolism. He is a founder of Artiflex, Agricola Cornelia SpA and Baruchello Cultural Foundation.
Gianfranco was named the "artist of the year 2016" by Rai Radio 3, an Italian radio channel. Also, Baruchello is a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters.
Baruchello’s works are kept in the collections of different museums and art centres, including the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, the Centre Georges Pompidou in Paris and others.
