Engaged in paper manufacturing in Edo. He made Chinese paper in large sheets of 30 by 60 feet which he called Horai paper. Also improved crude oil mined in Ecrugo Province (Niigata Prefecture) into lamp oil. When he attempted to sell the oil on the market, wholesalers of vegetable oil for lamps filed a suit against him and he was jailed. With the cooperation of Gennai Hiraga, another scientific-minded man and noted scholar, he evolved a kind of asbestos cloth.
