Gila Ballas was born in 1927 in Jerusalem, Yerushalayim, Israel.
In 1945 Gila Ballas entered Bezalel Art School, Jerusalem. During 1948-1950 she studied at Art Teachers College, Tel-Aviv, where received Teacher Diploma. During 1954-1955 studied Museology at Ecole du Louvre, Paris. In 1964-1970 received a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy at Tel-Aviv University. During 1970-1974 Gila Ballas studied at Université de Paris I Sorbonne, where she received a Doctor of Philosophy in Art History.
Gila Ballas started her work in Tel-Aviv Museum in charge of Art Education. During 1952-1954 she was an Art History Teacher in Art Teachers’ College, Tel-Aviv, and in Music Teachers’ College. Also, Gila Ballas taught in ORT Technicum, Givataim in 1956-1962.
Furthermore, Gila Ballas worked as an Art Critic in different Journals & Periodicals from 1952-1965. Since 1974 in Tel-Aviv University, Art History Departure as a Lecturer. In 1975 she founded Tel-Aviv University, Archives of Israeli Art (Ziffer House), and since 1979 worked as a Senior lecturer. From 1991-1995 she held the position of founder & head in Tel-Aviv University, Pluridisciplinary Program in the Arts.
