Graduate Western Reserve College, 1859. Admitted to Ohio bar, 1861.

Career

Entered army as Lieutenant, 19th Ohio volunteer infantry, 1861. 18th United States infantry, 1861-1866. Bvtd. captain for gallantry, battle Stone River.

Served in Indian campaigns. Major 4th United States infantry. Lieutenant colonel 7th infantry.

Promoted brigadier general vols. for gallantry at El Caney, from September 21, 1898, to May 12, 1899. As colonel 18th infantry commanded at the battles of Jaro and Pavia, Island of Panay, P.I. Was made brigadier general United States of America and retired January 1900. Brigadier general United States Army, retired, January 1900.
