From 1957 to 1958 he studied at New York University in New York City, New York, United States. In two years Gilles studied at École Nationale des Beaux-Arts in Paris, France. In 1964 he graduated from it. From 1964 to 1965 he studied at "AT.URB.A." at the faculty of city planning and architecture in Paris, France.
Prior to 1970 Larrain practiced architecture and design in Paris and New York. From 1971 to 1973 Gilles Michel was a freelance photographer and technical assistant for Office de Radiodiffusion Télévision Française. Next year he became a correspondent for Atlas Air France magazine. He held this position until 1973.
Since 1973 Gilles Michel was president of Gilles Larrain, Inc., and from 1974 to 1977 was U.S. correspondent for the French magazine Architecture d’Intérieur/Créé.
The photographer was the subject of a one-hour color television documentary in 1975, Gilles Larrain, Un Photographe à New York. Larrain does advertising, general, and studio photography.
