Rose, Gillian was born on September 20, 1947 in London.
BA, University of Oxford. 1967-1970; Philosophy Department, Columbia University, 1970-1971. DPhil, University of Oxford, 1971 4.
Lecturer, Sociology. University of Sussex. Since 1989, Professor of Sociology and European Thought, University of Warwick.
Rose’s work has been broadly concerned with ethical, political and methodological questions raised in the historical context of Modernity, although the challenging range of her scholarly interests makes it difficult to classify her writings. Urging further reflection on the role and direction of critical thought, problems of judging and legitimation, future communities, and issues of tradition and history, her diverse texts raise questions about authorship and gender, Judaic thought and theology, as well as legal, literary and political forms of writing. Her attempts to keep alive the possibility of critique, in disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, politics and law, issue a regenerative challenge to resignation or complacency.
