Mrs. Belli told CA: “In 1970 I joined the Sandinistan underground. My life changed. I lived in constant fear of being discovered. I became part of the logistics team in a commando action that took place in 1974. The dictatorship unleashed a ferocious repressive campaign. Hundreds were put into prison and tried by a military tribunal. I left the country before the regime had a chance to capture me. In 1975 I was tried in absentia by the military tribunal and condemned to seven years in prison for ‘conspiring’ against the government. I lived in exile and worked against the dictatorship. I wrote communiques, put out a newspaper to inform Costa Ricans about what was going on in Nicaragua, and smuggled arms across to Nicaragua."
For the first time Gioconda Belli married in 1967 but divorced in 1979. She again married Charles Castaldi (a radio producer) on April 10, 1987. Mrs. Belli has 4 children: Maryan, Melissa, Camilo, Adriana.
