Born on July 27, 1835, in the Tuscan village of Val di Castello, Carducci was the eldest son of a country physician and his wife. His father, Michele, was a political activist whose role in the Romagnol revolt of 1831 resulted in his imprisonment. When Carducci was three years old, the family moved to the Tuscan Maremma, where Carducci gained an appreciation of nature through explorations of the countryside near their home.
Carducci was tutored in literature and history by his father, and early studies in Florence, which afforded him a solid foundation in Latin and the Italian classics, prepared Carducci for the Teachers College of Pisa (now the University of Pisa), from which he graduated in 1856.
In 1856 Carducci accepted a position as a professor of rhetoric at San Miniato al Tedesco, and while there published his first volume of poetry. Carducci was also engaged in philosophical disputes in the local press over literary and political matters. His outspoken manner provoked the anger of education authorities, and as a result of this conflict, he resigned his teaching position.
Unable to win the necessary government approval to occupy another post, Carducci settled once again in Florence, where he tutored students privately and wrote for literary journals. With more liberal-minded officials in power in 1860, he was awarded a professorship in classical studies at the University of Bologna and remained there until his retirement in 1904. Carducci was also made a senator for life in 1890 and was revered by the Italians as a national poet.
Giosue Carducci was the most important poet of the late nineteenth-century neoclassical movement in Italian literature.
Giosue Carducci was the first Italian to receive the Nobel Prize in Literature, in 1906. He was also elected a Senator of Italy. Although his reputation rests primarily on his poetry, he also produced a large body of prose works. Indeed, his prose writings, including literary criticism, biographies, speeches and essays, fill some 20 volumes. Carducci was also an excellent translator and translated some of Goethe and Heine into Italian.
The Museum of the Risorgimento, Bologna is housed in the Casa Carducci, the house where he died at the age of 71, and contains exhibits on the author.

Carducci was an atheist, whose political views were vehemently hostile to Christianity generally and the Catholic Church in particular.
Carducci's gradual development from youthful revolutionary idealism to later acceptance of a conservative monarchy closely mirrors the course of 19th-century Italian history.
An ardent patriot, he deplored the extent to which the passive temper of Christianity and the anti-rational aspects of Romanticism coloured nineteenth-century Italian life and literature, and he believed these influences could be best counteracted through a return to purely classical ideals.
Quotations: "I know neither truth of God nor peace with the Vatican or any priests. They are the real and unaltering enemies of Italy. "
A powerfully built man whose prominent jaw accentuated an aggressive appearance, Carducci in his early writings proudly declared himself to be "a shield bearer of the classics," that is, a defender of a traditional literary formation.
A product of his times, he fulfilled his lofty conception of the civic mission of a poet - the expression and exaltation of the values of his people.
In 1859, Carducci married Elvira Menicucci, and they had four children.
