This etching is signed in the plate in the upper left left with the artist's monogram followed by the inscription 'Castilione | Genovese.' It is from the first and only state and belongs to the series known as the "Small Studies of Heads in Oriental Headdress." Conveying a depth of emotion, Castiglione depicts a young turbaned man, twisting around as if caught in a moment of agony or rage. Castiglione sought to create more than just portraits; he wanted to assess his subject's character and does so skillfully in this descriptive work.
