Muehlenbeck was later freed inside Afghanistan. Lo Porto was accidentally killed by a United States drone strike on the Afghanistan-Pakistan border while being kept hostage, along with American contractor Warren Weinstein and American al Qaeda commander Ahmed Farouq.
