On her deathbed, the king's wife makes him promise only to marry a woman as beautiful as she. Years later, when the king is convinced to marry again, he realizes that the only suitable woman is his own daughter. He begs her to marry him. The horrified princess makes impossible requests to stall her fathera dress bright as the sun, a dress bright as the moon, a dress all the colors of the sky. The king grants her every wish. Finally, she says she will only marry him if he gives her the hide of a marvelous donkey. When the king gives her even this, she knows he will not be put off and decides to flee. In this dark fairy tale, a princess must bear toil and degradation before finding a man who she can trust and love. "Donkeyskin" is a classic story about honor, lust, and love. Giovanni Francesco Straparola (1480 1557) was an Italian writer and fairy tale collector. He has been termed the progenitor of the literary form of the fairy tale. Straparola's main work is The Facetious Nights of Straparola (Le piacevoli notti, published 1550-1555), a collection of 75 stories. Modelled on Decamerone, it has participants of a 13-night party in the island of Murano, near Venice, tell each other stories that vary from bawdy to fantastic. It contains the first known written versions of many fairy tales.

Gianfrancesco Straparola was born at Caravaggio late in the 15th century. However, nothing more is known of his life until 1508 when he is found to be in Venice where he signed his name "Zoan" on the title page of his Opera nova de Zoan Francesco Straparola da Caravaggio novamente stampata (New Works).
Not much is known of Straparola's life save for a few facts regarding his published works. The first part of his collection of tales, Le piacevoli notti ("The Entertaining Nights"), was published at Venice in 1550, a second part appeared in 1553, and he died sometime after 1557. Using as the framework of his story the fiction that a company of ladies and gentlemen have gathered together to pass the last 13 nights of the carnival season listening to songs, stories, and riddles, Straparola relates the 75 tales told and the 73 riddles propounded. He was markedly original in introducing into the collection fables and fairy tales with fantastic and supernatural elements, a type of narrative theretofore considered to appeal only to the lowest social classes. The story of Puss in Boots, which appears for the first time in European literature in Le piacevoli notti, is the most familiar example of this type of tale in Straparola. Extremely popular in 16th-century Italy and in France, where it was translated soon after publication, Straparola's work has had a wide influence in the field of the fairy tale.
