Gisle Bang was born on the 25th of March 1927 in Lillehammer, Oppland, Norway; the son of Asbjörn and Signe (Klevdahl) Bang.

In 1951, Bang graduated from the University of Oslo with a Doctor degree in Dental Surgery. He received a degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Oslo in 1961. Also in 1974 Bang graduated from the University of Bergen in Norway with a Doctor of Philosophy degree.
Gisle Bang began his career as a Research physiologist at the United States Air Force in Fairbanks, Alaska and held the position from 1955 to 1957. He then moved to Boston, where he worked as a Research fellow at Harvard School of Dental Medicine in 1957 and at School Dentistry in Oslo from 1958 to 1959 and also he worked at Bergen University betwen 1962 and 1965 and in 1967-1972.
Bang held a position of a Postdoctoral scholar at the Bone Research Laboratory of the University of California in Los Angeles in 1965-1966. In 1966 Bang decided to to take a position of a visiting pathologist of Oral pathology department at Indiana University, Indianapolis.
Since 1972 Gisle was a Professor of Oral pathology department at the University of Bergen. Since 1973 Gisle Bang worked as a Senior resident of Pathology department and a Chief attending physician at the University of Bergen, since 1983.
Gisle Bang was a member of Scandinavian Society of Oral Pathology and Medicine, Norwegian Forensic Odontology Society, Norwegian Dental Association, International Forensic Odontostomatology Society, European Pathology Society, International Oral Pathology Association, International Dentistry Association and Scandinavian Forensic Odontology Society.
Gisle Bang was married to Arna Helene Tösdal on the 29th of May 1954 and had 2 daughters.
