Giuseppe Gioachino Belli Edit Profile

poet

Giuseppe Gioachino Belli was an Italian poet.

Background

Giuseppe Gioachino Belli was born on September 7, 1791 at Rome, Italy.

Career

He is remembered for his vivid popular poetry in the Roman dialect, a number of satirical sonnets which in their own way are unique. Although he also wrote conventional poems in Italian, his originality lies in the sonnets, which express his revolt against literary tradition, the academic mentality, and the social injustices of the papal system.

He died in Rome in 1863 from a stroke. His nephew, painter Guglielmo Janni, wrote a monumental biography in 10 volumes, which was published posthumously in 1967.
