This book establishes the hypothesis that there are profound links between John Milton's «rule of charity» as described in The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce and St. Augustine's exegesis in De Doctrina Christiana - as it pertains to the Christian man and the primary factor that should determine his earthly actions. The author stresses the point that Milton charac- terizes the Christian-wife-prototype as a «thing to be used» by her husband, which is founded in the Augustinian exegesis. Paradise Lost and Samson Agonistes are discussed as exempla of Milton's theory.
