Glenn Daniel Winter is a London-based solicitor and senior partner of Winter & Co Solicitors LLP, a specialist maritime firm. Admitted as a solicitor in 1982, he has spent more than four decades in shipping and maritime law, with a practice centred on arbitration, mediation and landmark cases such as The Starsin.
Background
Winter's professional life is rooted in English legal practice. He was admitted as a solicitor on 1 October 1982, and the Solicitors Regulation Authority, which regulates solicitors in England and Wales, continues to list him as an authorised solicitor.
His documented education includes study at the University of Oxford, where he took a Master of Arts degree. Admission in England placed him within a profession that licenses lawyers to advise clients and conduct litigation, and his later career developed around maritime and shipping law in London.
Education
Winter studied at the University of Oxford and received a Master of Arts there. Oxford is one of the oldest universities in the English-speaking world, and its collegiate structure combines university examinations with tutorial teaching within individual colleges.
Winter also held a visiting fellowship at the College of Law of the University of Illinois and has taught at the university. The College of Law was established in 1897 at the Champaign-Urbana flagship campus and became a charter member of the Association of American Law Schools, an early national body for American legal education.
Career
Winter's professional career began in England with his admission as a solicitor in 1982. He became a partner of Ingledew, Brown, Bennison & Garrett, a London solicitors' practice that handled commercial matters and maritime litigation and arbitration. The firm was already acting as solicitors in English property litigation in 1983, showing that it had an established London practice during the period of his admission.
Winter also held a visiting fellowship at the College of Law of the University of Illinois, where he has taught. The University of Illinois College of Law, founded in 1897, forms part of an American public university system with a long record in legal education and scholarship.
In August 2022 Winter became a founding partner of Winter & Co, a specialist maritime firm established following the demerger of Winter Scott LLP. The firm advises protection and indemnity (P&I) clubs, which are mutual insurance associations covering shipowners' liabilities, as well as marine insurers, shipowners and charterers on shipping-related legal matters. Winter serves as its senior partner and has been ranked among the leading UK shipping lawyers.
In 2026 Gallagher Bassett, a claims management provider within the Arthur J. Gallagher group, acquired Winter & Co. Winter's team remained in London under the direction of Gallagher Bassett's regional leadership.
